A day with the eagles

Kids and I headed down to Wabasha MN in the fog and haze to do some eagle watching on January 5th. The open stretch of river from the junction of the Mississippi and Chippewa rivers down to Alma, WI has hundreds of bald and golden eagles feeding on a flowing buffet of mergansers, goldeneyes and gizzard shad. Sure is fun to watch. The light was really flat with fog and haze which killed the video and photos (along with the fact I forgot the 3x converter lenses for the vid cams at home).
If you are looking at shooting stills, better have some high end big glass! I'm not sure a 400mm would do it without a teleconverter.

Chris White has some good images from his trip yesterday HERE.

The National Eagle Center in Wabasha is a must see. Very, very nice. They also have three permanent resident bald eagles who were injured and can no longer fly. This one is Angel.

All in all a fun day. Think I'll play hooky from work the next clear, calm, colder than hell day we have and head back down there. Simply amazing.

I can't believe you allow your kids to go bird watching with you. Do you understand the dangers involved with watching wild animals in an uncontrolled environment?
Sorry man, had to do it...
